God's Expression of Love to Us

(7th in the series of expositions on Communion delivered on  Sep 3, 1978)

Psalms 23:5 says, "...a table before me in the presence of my enemies...".  Is this a figure of speech with no particular content? What is this table? What enemies? What does this expression mean here?

Does it mean that God has made provision for us amidst our enemies? Our enemies, the world, sin, flesh, Satan, all of them has a vested interest in us, lying and waiting for us. They won't attack us when we are strong but waits to pounce us in our weakness: 'the way to conquer is to surround him and cut off his blood supply (i.e. line of communication)'. The starvation tactic is especially effectively used against fortified cities. (Psalms 22:12 conveys the idea of being surrounded by the enemies, being left without outside help. But the Lord is our very present help as we are being surrounded.)

What kind of provision does the Lord render for us? Is it only food? No, we are saved from the power of the enemies. That is what the Lord has provided for us, His salvation. In Jn 6:35 Jesus said: "I am the bread of life; he who comes to me shall not hunger...". He that 'eats' of Christ shall have eternal life.

The Lord demonstrates His love for us when He prepares a table for us before our enemies. Think for a moment: just when you are being surrounded by your enemies, Someone (Christ) brings out nice 'food' for you and sets the table before you!

From Rom 8:31-34, we read:

If God is for us, who is against us? He who did not spare His own Son but gave Him up for us all, will He not also give us all things with Him? Who shall bring any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies; who is to condemn? Is it Christ Jesus, who died, yes, who was raised from the dead, who is at the right hand of God, who indeed intercedes for us?

Christ died for us in the past, He intercedes for us now; His work never finishes. He does not condemn us, (for) the Lord's grace is a continuational one. How wonderful is God's love!

Rom 5:9-10 says, "How much more will He not give to us and do for us?
