Appropriation

(15th in the series of expositions on Communion delivered on  Jan 21, 1979)

Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, "Take, eat; this is My body." (Mt 26:26)

Take - this is speaking of God's grace to us. [There is] nothing to take unless God makes it available to us.

What has God made available to us? Nothing less than Himself, 'My body'. The Lord gave Himself in a very concrete way. Take my life and make it Your own, take my life and live on me.'

Why is it that so many Christians are so poverty-stricken spiritually? God's grace is enough for us, we have the life that transforms a sinner into a righteous man, His grace has been given to us but we have not taken it, we have not because we have not asked. Ask for the Holy Spirit and the Father will give (Luke 11:13). When God gave manna to the Israelites, they had to go out and take it, it did not drop into their mouths.

The more we take of it, the more we can triumph. God's grace has been given to all, the difference lies in that one takes and draws upon Him while others don't. What are the things that we take in Christ? Forgiveness (Acts 10:43), reconciliation (Rom 5:11), grace and righteousness (Rom 5:17) Holy Spirit (John 7:39), kingdom of God (Heb 12:28). In Christ, God has blessed us with every spiritual blessing.

  • Take nothing and give nothing - unbelievers

  • Take something and give nothing - spiritual egoists

  • Take little and give little - little in faith

  • Take all and give all - life of total commitment
