Reaching out to our Neighborhood

by Rebecca, November, 1996

Mission in Hong Kong
This year in Hong Kong we have an Island-wide pamphlet distribution - an outreach program, that involves all the sister churches; Peng Chau Church is not excluded.

Prior to our launching out into the Private housing estates, we were told of the difficulty and were forewarned of the possibility of being chased out by the security officer on duty.

Well, lo and behold, when we, my partner and 1, arrived at our designated apartment building, to our surprise the main entrance glass doors were wide open to welcome us! The security officer was nowhere to be found, only the postman. Amazing, thanks to the Lord, what perfect timing.

Challenging! Though we did not manage to finish distributing the pamphlets to the residences of that block, nevertheless in the Lord's work there is always joy, and there are precious lessons to learn from observation and experience.

As I recalled what happened, truly very often when we launch out in any area of our service for the Lord the tendency is we get so caught with the task and forget our main objective of our ministry. We prayed for accessibility to the building to distribute the pamphlets but we forgot to pray for the security officer on duty that he would not get into trouble. By the Lord's grace through this program, he too might be given the chance to experience God, turning his fear into a blessing. This reminded me of Acts 16:3 1-3 3 - The jailer's conversion.

Subtlely, we measure our effectiveness of service and God's goodness by what we accomplish. And somehow lost sight of the Lord and the task becomes a personal matter. Hence when faced with this so-called "failure" we were easily discouraged and disheartened. We are called to do God's work and not men's. For with God nothing is impossible hence in every happening there is a purpose. It is so important to constantly keep our focus upon the Lord, keep seeking to know what is His will in all circumstances. It is He who sends us. The question is: How sensitive and flexible are we, ready to be led by God to "mission impossible"? Yet God always works through the impossible. Are we prepared to experience His abundance grace?

Isa 55:8 "For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways," says the LORD. v9 "For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts."

Therefore let us constantly remain faithful, keeping a pure and contrite heart before our God, through whom He can speak to and through, any time, anywhere.
