Unity in Co-working

by John Teo, October, 1996

Gospel Outreach Mission to the South of Manila (Balayan)
Looking at the whole trip, I would describe it as though we are like a commando unit - a special force in the army. On the whiteboard at the, brothers' place, we have the word SCUM which stands for the Special Commando Unit of the Messiah.

Why I would describe it as this, is because upon landing at the Philippines, the six of us were immediately whisked to the south and on Sunday we began our work. Each of us was armed with specific sessions of the Commitment Training (CT). Every night, we moved out to conduct the CT. It is a unit where each one specialized in certain aspects. It was a two week mission to conduct two CTs at separate locations. One thing wonderful about the group was a certain harmony and also unity amongst us. I find this very touching. In the past, from others' sharing, I was not able to understand or rather picture how such a unit can perform. But this time the Lord granted the six of us to experience unity in co-working. And as one in the group shared, it gives hope, a hope in the future.

As to the CT in Philippines, the majority of the questions that arose asked about riches. We had Questions&Answers time at each location - after session five and session ten. We found out from Pastora Flor that they have been used to a Prosperity Gospel. So most people were attracted because of prosperity that was promised unto them. In the CT, this aspect hit them very hard and it generated a lot of questions from them. The Philippines Church on the whole, has a serious lack of scriptural teaching. But they have very fine people. The church where we stayed, we found they had a very strong core group. This core group functions very well and it go to all lengths of difficulty and trouble to support one another. The Lord has been very gracious to grant them good life-quality.

Upon completion of our mission, we still think much of the people. Especially, those who listened to the CT. And our mission is something of a 'hit and run'. There was no follow-up work and we are very much concerned for the people. We can only entrust this to the Lord.
