A sharing by Helen Chang for this song:
When I first noticed among my classmates that they were trying to study and do well to get more approval from their parents, I found such motivation really strange, whereas I had to obey my mother at all times without any option period! Even when I did obey her in everything, it was fully expected of me such that no favour would ever be accorded.
With this concept since childhood, I had always aimed to do what was expected of me be it at school, at work or at home. I did not have any other motivation in my life until God Yahweh dealt with my hatred towards my father and the half family in my early twenties. That was the first time I experienced the reality and the compassion of God Yahweh in my life. The song I later wrote How Much I Owe You would express the effects it had on my life ever since.
It is this inexpressible yet lasting gratitude in my heart towards the living God that began to motivate me to see things from a new perspective with Him as the centre of my life.
In the years that followed as I had to face other challenges in my life, I slowly realised the need to please Him as taught in His word. That’s why alongside the strong motivation of great indebtedness to the LORD, the element of pleasing Him became an equally steady motivation in my life ever since!
Once the motivation began to take root, the means as to how to please Yahweh began to become a reality by the renewing of my mind through His Holy Spirit.
These passages in Scripture clearly show the way and the means for anyone who truly aims to please Yahweh in our everyday situation. This is livable in spite of our weaknesses and dullness to spiritual realities at times because His Spirit would enable us so to live!
